Ready for Assembly

August 16, 2014

Skilled fabricator/welders in the WHOI Mechanical Shop made these parts, which are ready to be assembled into a sturdy tripod that will hold an acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP). The tubular aluminum parts are the legs, the ADCP will be mounted on the aluminum brackets at upper right, and the square steel plates are footpads that help anchor the tripod. The tripod allows scientists to measure water speed and direction in shallow water along the coast or in rivers with high currents. WHOI engineer assistant Jay Sisson designed it to be modular for easy transport and rapid replacement of damaged parts. (Photo by Richard Pittenger, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
