August 1, 2011A work crew fits the boom to R/V Atlantis‘ new mizzen mast in this undated photograph from the Munro Shipyard in Chelsea, Mass. Atlantis served as WHOI’s globally ranging oceanographic research ship–the first U.S. vessel built expressely for interdisciplinary oceanographic research–from 1931 to 1964. Atlantis continues to work under the name Dr. Bernardo A. Houssay for Argentina and also served as the namesake for two other WHOI ships and the Space Shuttle Atlantis, which recently completed its final flight.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
