Radiation Monitors

August 2, 2013

Three months after the 2011 nuclear plant disaster in Fukushima, Japan, WHOI marine chemist Ken Buesseler led an expedition to the Northwest Pacific to investigate the extent and impacts of radioactive chemicals washed into the region. The expedition included biologists from Stony Brook University who collected samples of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and small fish to learn if radioisotopes from Fukushima were accumulating in marine life. Here, scientists Hannes Baumann and Jennifer George collect copepods for analysis.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
