Pilot on deck

The port pilot steps from the pilot boat onto the ship across a gap of churning water, ready to guide the vessel to the dock after the cruise. In this case, the ship is R/V Oceanus; the cruise is an oceanographic research cruise led by WHOI scientist Amy Bower and funded by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and the port is Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea, where researchers from WHOI, Saudi Arabia, and other countries participated in collaborative studies in fall 2008.
