Power-hitting Microbiologist

Power-hitting Microbiologist

June 30, 2012

Summer brings catching chemists, fielding physicists, and batting biologists—like Louie Wurch (here), to McKee Field at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to play in the long-running WHOI softball league. Since 2007, Wurch captained the Biology Department’s team, the Redfielders—named after Redfield Laboratory and pioneering WHOI biologist Alfred Redfield. As a graduate and postdoctoral student at WHOI, Wurch examined the inner workings of harmful algae that cause brown tides. On Monday, Wurch leaves WHOI for Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and he ended his Redfielders career on Wednesday against the team from the WHOI Geology & Geophysics Department.(Photo courtesy of Louie Wurch)
