Krill Hunters

Krill Hunters

January 19, 2011

WHOI biologist Gareth Lawson (green shirt) and summer student fellow Jon Fincke reach to recover the Video Plankton Recorder (VPR), a towed underwater microscope that collects images of plankton. On a July 2010 research cruise south of Nantucket, Lawson and WHOI biologist Peter Wiebe used plankton nets, echosounders, and the VPR to study large aggregations of krill—animals vital to ocean food webs—in undersea canyons at the edge of the continental shelf.
