Heading Home
March 16, 2011Flags flying, R/V Knorr steams down Vineyard Sound towards the WHOI dock and home, after crossing the Atlantic from the Azores in July 2010. A yellow “quarantine” flag, flown when a ship enters port and before it is cleared by port officials, accompanies the U.S. and WHOI flags. Launched in 1968 and operated by WHOI, Knorr is part of the UNOLS (University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System) fleet of research ships. WHOI will soon operate a new ship, one of two new research vessels soon to be built by the Navy.(Photo by Tom Lanagan, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
