Getting Warmer

Getting Warmer

September 6, 2013

Vermont teacher Doug Jaquette views an image of himself taken by a thermographic camera, which senses and records infrared (IR) radiation. The amount of IR radiation emitted by objects is related to their temperature. On the display, white, red, and orange indicate warmer surfaces and blue and green indicate cooler surfaces. Jaquette was one of nine teachers attending a day-long workshop about ocean currents taught by scientists Steven Jayne and Claudia Cenedese and sponsored by WHOI and Woods Hole Sea Grant. Cenedese uses the thermographic camera to determine surface water temperature in lab experiments where currents are driven by buoyancy caused by temperature differences.(Photo by Cherie Winner, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
