Dance the Arctic Blues Away

March 11, 2012

During long research cruises, particularly when bad weather keeps people indoors for periods, ship and science crews organize “morale events” to raise spirits and help keep the group working as a team. On a recent, winter trip to the Arctic, crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy staged a Saturday night “rave” in the ship’s helicopter hangar, complete with fog machines, music, fluorescent lights, and glow sticks on strings, as well as a charcoal grill where everyone could cook their own steaks.(Photo courtesy of Carin Ashjian, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
