Atlantis II in Monaco
March 25, 2012In 1963, WHOI’s research ship Atlantis II stopped over in Monaco on its way to the Suez Canal and a research cruise in the Indian Ocean. The second of three WHOI ships named Atlantis, the “A-II” arrived in Woods Hole that same year and retired in 1996 after 33 years, more than a million miles, ports of call in 78 nations, and visitors that included Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Japan’s Crown Prince Akihito. From 1984 on, Atlantis II was the support vessel for Alvin and took part in searching for the U.S.S. Thresher in 1963 and documenting the Titanic in 1986.
