Still Sailing

The original remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason waits for a 1991 cruise aboard the submarine support vessel Betty Chouest as Steve Lerner (facing camera) and Sandipa Singh of the Deep Submergence Lab check out the DSL120 sidescan sonar system. Jason’s first voyage was in 1988. A second-generation Jason debuted in 2002 and is still in service today. The Jason vehicles have been workhorses of deep-sea research, helping scientists discover previously unknown hydrothermal vents, witness an underwater volcano, and rescue stranded equipment.
