Science in Bloom

June 3, 2013

The Synergy Project paired scientists and artists to create science-inspired works of art. WHOI biologist Elizabeth Halliday (right) collaborated with Janine Wong, a graphic designer and book artist, to create Bloom, a book inspired by the ocean’s voluminous seasonal phytoplankton blooms. The two are shown at the Boston Museum of Science, which hosted an exhibit of Synergy artwork (on view through June 9). Bloom includes prints by Wong inspired by photographs of phytoplankton, diagrams and thoughts from the lab notebook of MIT/WHOI graduate student Sophie Clayton, and a poem written by Halliday.(Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
