Ready to Ring
August 31, 2018WHOI Ship Operations project manager Pam Clark and RADM Dick Pittenger stand next to a new ship’s bell destined for the research vessel Neil Armstrong when it returns to Woods Hole in October. In the past, bells were used to mark time at sea and divide the sailors’ day into a regular schedule of duties. Today, bells are primarily used on naval ships to announce the arrival of dignitaries and for safety in foggy conditions. (Photo by Ken Kostel, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
