WHOI Ship Operations project manager Pam Clark and RADM Dick Pittenger stand next to a new ship’s bell destined for the research vessel Neil Armstrong when it returns to Woods Hole in October. In the past, bells were used to mark time at sea and divide the sailors’ day into a regular schedule of duties.
