Ready to Dive and Discover

December 9, 2013

Hydrothermal vents are famous for chimneys that belch hot, mineral-laden water from deep beneath the ocean floor. Not all the fluid at vent sites flows so dramatically, though. Some diffuse through the seafloor in regions like the one shown here, photographed from above by the remotely operated vehicle Jason. Join us in January for Dive & Discover cruise 15, as WHOI scientists Stefan Sievert and Jeff Seewald lead an international team investigating the microbial life and ecology of diffuse-flow areas and the subseafloor at the 9 North vent site in the Pacific.(Photo courtesy of Maurice Tivey and WHOI Deep Submergence Lab, Cruise Manus 2006 with ROV Jason, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
