WHOI physical oceanographer Magdalena Andres conducts a final check of a Current and Pressure recording Inverted Echo Sounder (CPIES) before deploying the instrument from the research vessel Neil Armstrong recently. Andres and a science crew from the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, University of North Carolina (UNC), North Carolina State University, the UNC Coastal Studies Institute, and Georgia Tech are part of the PEACH (Processes Driving Exchange at Cape Hatteras) program. They are investigating physical processes controlling the exchange of waters between the continental shelf and the deep ocean near Cape Hatteras, N.C., where shelf waters from the north and south collide with the Gulf Stream.
