Mission Accomplished

Mission Accomplished

September 24, 2018

The remotely operated vehicle Jason is recovered after a mission to explore Brothers Volcano in the Kermedec Arc 400 nautical miles off the northern coast of New Zealand. WHOI scientists and colleagues investigated how the undersea volcano releases heat, chemicals, and metals into the ocean and how it sustains a lush community of deep-sea life. Jason and its partner vehicle Medea carried several high-definition cameras, plus an array of sensors and samplers, up close to the rim and down onto the floor of the caldera.
