Life Below the Waterline

May 21, 2017

WHOI biologists Peter Wiebe (standing), Joel Llopiz (left) and Chrissy Hernandez, an MIT-WHOI Joint Program graduate student, watch as data from sensors on the hull of R/V Neil Armstrong scroll across a screen in real time in the ship’s main lab. As one of the nation’s newest and most advanced oceanographic research vessels, Neil Armstrong is equipped with several new sensors that provide scientists an uprecedented view of the ocean. One of them, the EK80, is a highly advanced “fish finder” that uses broadband acoustic energy to give a detailed look at organisms in the water beneath the ship.
