A Geophysical Gathering

A Geophysical Gathering

July 24, 2016

It wouldn’t be summer in Woods Hole without this annual ritual photo on the front porch of the humble Walsh Cottage on the WHOI campus, documenting this year’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Fellowship program. Each summer since 1959, the cottage has been re-populated with leading oceanographers, physicists, and mathematicians, along with eight to ten graduate student “fellows,” who explore the rewards of interdisciplinary research. Geophysical fluid dynamics is common to many fields—including physical oceanography, meteorology, astrophysics, planetary atmospheres, and hydromagnetics—and scientists can find insights outside their narrower subdisciplines. Over its history, the GFD program has produced numerous alumnae/i who are prominent scientists at universities throughout the world. (Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
