Embarking on Cruise and Career

August 3, 2018

More than 400 MIT-WHOI Joint Program students just beginning their oceanographic careers have found their bearings aboard the Jake Peirson Summer Cruise, which began in 1990 as a rich introduction to conducting science at sea. Seventeen incoming first-year students sailed last month with Sea Education Association crew members aboard the Corwith Cramer, a 134-foot-long sailing school vessel. They tried their hands as crew members and oceanographers, learning about brigantines and bathymetry, tacks and trawls, points of sail and plankton nets, and more.
