WHOI research engineer Kevin Manganini launches “ChemYak,” a variation of the remote-controlled surface vehicle known as JetYak developed by WHOI to collect data in shallow water or difficult conditions. ChemYak is equipped with a variety of sensors that measure carbon dioxide, methane and other gases as they are released from, in this case, beneath the thawing ice in Cambridge Bay, Canada. The mission was aimed at determining how “outgassing” events triggered by melting ice play a role in the region’s carbon cycle. (Photo by Victoria Preston, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
