Diminishing sea ice in the Antarctic will mean fewer fish and squid to eat for emperor penguins—like these at Atka Bay Colony. The Single Penguin Observation and Tracking (SPOT) Observatory (blurry, in the distant background) helps scientists study the behavior and ecology of the endangered species year-round, especially during the coldest and darkest months of the year. WHOI researcher Dan Zitterbart developed a remote sensing method that allows scientists to monitor the seabirds’ foraging success from thousands of miles away. He is currently at the observatory performing the annual maintenance that keeps the cameras, sensors, and other instruments running smoothly.
