John Kreider
It is with profound sadness that I share the news that WHOI Trustee John Kreider died following a mountain biking accident on July 23, 2026, while on a family vacation in Chamonix, France. He was critically injured in a fall and died shortly after being airlifted to a nearby hospital.
John was a cherished member of the WHOI community, a generous and thoughtful volunteer leader, and a friend to many of us. He cared deeply about this institution and the people who make it extraordinary. He brought wisdom, clarity, and curiosity to his service as a WHOI trustee since 2020, and throughout his time on the board, he was an unwavering advocate for WHOI and especially for the technical staff and engineers whose work is so essential to advancing ocean science.
A graduate of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, John built a distinguished career as an ocean engineer. In his professional life, he held executive leadership positions at Oceaneering, where he worked for more than two decades, and at Shell before that. He dedicated countless hours to public service, chairing the NOAA Ocean Exploration Advisory Board through 2020 and, more recently, serving as Chair of the NOAA Science Advisory Board. He also served on the boards of the Sea-Space Symposium and Aegis Aerospace.
John will be remembered for his kindness, humility, generosity of spirit, and genuine interest in others. He was an avid fly fisherman and, above all, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
John is survived by his wife, Bobbin, their two sons, and five grandchildren.
His loss will be felt deeply at WHOI and across the oceanographic community. Our hearts are with his family and everyone who loved John. We are profoundly grateful for his extraordinary service to WHOI and for the many ways he strengthened our institution, our mission, and our community.
John’s family expects to hold a family-only service in the coming days, with a broader celebration of John’s life to be held in the coming months. We will share additional information as these plans become available.
