Charles “Hovey” Clifford

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of casual employee/retiree and WHOI ambassador Charles “Hovey” Clifford on November 24, 2025.

Hovey joined the institution in 1969 and supported the institution in various roles in Biology, MC&G, AOP&E, and Marine Ops until his retirement in 1999. He remained actively involved at the Institution, serving as a tour guide, teaching CPR, and lending a hand wherever needed. He was generous with his know-how and with his time. Hundreds of us and our friends and family members have our Hovey stories, which we will hold close to our hearts in this moment and forever. Additional details will be available next week.
