Thomas H. M. Smart

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death January 1, 2000 of retiree Thomas H.M. Smart at the JML Care Center in Falmouth after a long illness. He was 77.

Tom was born April 12, 1922 in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved with his family to the United States when he was four years old. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1939, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He worked as an apprentice tool and die maker for the Holger Hanson Company in Lynn, MA, from 1946 to 1950, when he joined the staff at General Electric Company, also in Lynn, as a die maker. He left General Electric in 1966 to join the WHOI staff as a machinist and was promoted to Senior Machinist in 1974. He retired from WHOI in 1987.

He is survived by three daughters, Madeline A. Ambrose of Plymouth, MA, Barbara McDonnell of Aurora, CO, and Charlotte Cohen of Yarmouthport, MA; a son, George Smart, of Marshfield, MA; a brother, John Smart, of Plymouth, MA; two sisters, Isabel Lyle of Dallas, Texas, and Margaret Mackiernan of Lynchburg, VA.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at noon tomorrow, January 4, 2000 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth. Visiting hours are 11 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the funeral home immediately prior to the service. Burial will be private.
