Sentry, a new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) built by engineers at WHOI, is loaded onto the R/V Tioga for testing operations during December 2007. The free-swimming underwater robot, which is designed to dive as deep as 5,000 meters (3.1 miles), completed its first scientific mission in August 2008, mapping the seafloor off the coast of Washington state. WHOI's newest autonomous underwater vehicle, Sentry, is launched from the research vessel Thomas Thompson in August 2008 during the AUV's first scientific expedition. The vehicle surveyed and helped pinpoint several proposed deep-water sites for seafloor instruments that will be deployed in the National Science Foundation’s Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI). Sentry is a robot built for exploring the deep ocean; it will often be used to complement Alvin by surveying large swaths of ocean floor to determine the best spots for close-up exploration.
