Joel C. Goldman

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of retiree Joel C. Goldman on September 30 after living with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease for many years. He was 83.

Joel began his career at WHOI in 1972 as postdoctoral investigator under John Ryther in the Biology Department.  He was promoted many times throughout is career.  In 1989, he became a senior scientist and in 1992, was the Department Chair of the Biology Department.  In 1996, he returned to senior scientist status.  He retired from WHOI in 1997 and in 1998, became a scientist emeritus.

Joel continued to contribute to science while at the University of California, Santa Cruz after retiring from WHOI. His love of running, biking, and walking his beloved Akita, Buster, filled his days.

Joel is survived by his wife of 52 years, Paula; two sons, Gregg and Josh; and two daughters-in-law, Sunshine and Laurel. Joel is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Emmet, Fiona, and Phoebe.
