I am interested in oceanic internal waves, turbulence, and mixing. My work combines theoretical analysis, seagoing observations, and instrument development to study internal wave generation, propagation across ocean basins, and eventual loss to nonlinear processes and turbulent dissipation. To measure of internal waves and turbulence in the ocean, I use acoustic Doppler sonars, microstructure profilers, autonomous gliders, and a variety of other innovative ocean-profiling systems.
For the last several years, I have been part of an NSF Climate Process Team (CPT) studying internal wave mixing. The goal of this collaboration is to improve parameterizations of ocean vertical mixing for climate models.
