Alvin Is Going to Pieces…Again

The Deep Submergence Vehicle Alvin will return home to Woods Hole in mid-October after two years and be taken apart right down to its titanium frame. The scheduled refit and overhaul occurs every three years or so and takes about six months. This may be the last for the 40-year-old sub, which is scheduled to be replaced with a new deeper diving version in four years. Alvin should be back together and ready for dive certification in April before beginning the 2006 schedule, which will return the sub and support vessel Atlantis to the Pacific.
