Giovanni Dematteis, Postdoctoral Investigator, joins WHOI’s PO Department.  Giovanni earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy.  Giovanni’s research interests are internal waves; ocean mixing, wave-wave interactions, making theoretical predictions to interpret observations, and quantification of extreme events.  Currently, Giovanni is working with Kurt Polzin on deriving a dynamics-based parameterization of internal wave driven mixing, and validating it with observations. He is also working on devising a prognostic model for the energy pathways in the oceanic internal wave field under tidal forcing. Giovanni enjoys outdoor activities and sports, especially hiking and running as well as folk music.
