2023 Summer Student Fellows
Andrea Belvis-Aquino (she/her) is pursuing a major in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. This summer, she has been collaborating with Caroline Ummenhofer on a project that involves using ocean salinity and other ocean properties to understand rainfall variability and predict wheat yields in Australia. Apart from her academic pursuits, Andrea enjoys baking, spending time outdoors, particularly at the beach, and reading.
Joe Carrigg (he/him) is currently at Oregon State University studying Oceanography. He is working with Lisan Yu and Viviane Menezes this summer on quantifying seasonal changes in heating and cooling patterns in the Arctic Ocean. Based on the data the team is working with, it seems to be really sensitive to changes in solar radiation. This will hopefully help them better understand the freeze/thaw cycles in the Arctic's sea ice. In his free time, Joe likes to spend a lot of time in the water. He trains with the OSU triathlon team back home (but only really goes to the swim practices) and has been doing a lot of freediving both on the west coast and the east coast. He also enjoys reading.
Abir Mahmud (he/him) comes from Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is currently a senior at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. Abir is majoring in physics and minoring in Mathematics and Computer Science, with a concentration in astrophysics. This summer, Abir has been collaborating with Alison Macdonald and Gregory Johnson (NOAA) on a research project centered around the changes in the Antarctic Bottom Water within the eastern-pacific region of the southern ocean. Being active outdoors: running, hiking and swimming brings Abir immense joy. He is also an avid fan of movies and stand-up comedies, and he even occasionally takes the stage himself to perform stand-up comedy.
Catherine Zhang (she/her) comes to WHOI from Yale University, where she studies Physics and Geosciences. This summer, she is studying the seasonal cycle of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) using RAPID-MOCHA array data with Nick Foukal. Outside of her studies, Catherine enjoys drawing, dancing, and playing piano and clarinet.
Nash Ward (he/him) is currently studying Mathematics at the University of Utah. This summer, he is investigating how sediment bands affect iceberg melt rates and stability with Claudia Cenedese (PO) and Alan Condron (G&G). In his free time, Nash likes to climb, ski, hike, mountain bike and generally be outdoors. He also enjoys visiting museums, cooking and doing photography.
2023 Summer Guest Students
Ryan Boyle (he/him) is studying Earth Sciences and German Studies at Dartmouth College. This summer, Ryan is comparing gyre indices and quantifying their significance with broader climatic and oceanic processes with supervisor, Nick Foukal. Changes in the strength and size of the subpolar gyre are hypothesized to have broader implications for overturning circulation, which excites Ryan, as such circulation plays an important role climatically. Ryan is hoping to turn this project into his undergraduate thesis! Ryan is a rower, and he loves the gritty nature of the sport, in addition to being on the water! In his free time, he likes to read novels and hike mountains. He is also an avid tea consumer, so he’s always keen to try new kinds that he hasn’t heard of yet.
Carlos Freiji (he/him) is studying Hydrography and Oceanography at ENSTA Bretagne in Brest, France. This summer, Carlos is studying the West Greenland Coastal Current (WGCC) and its evolution over the last 30 years with Nick Foukal. In his free time, he enjoys reading, walking in nature, going to the gym and scuba diving.
Daniel Waitzmann (he/him) is studying ‘Physics of the Earth System: Meteorology - Oceanography – Geophysics’ at Kiel University/ GEOMAR in Kiel, Germany. This summer he is studying with Caroline Ummenhofer on a project dealing with the variability of the Indonesian Throughflow. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the piano, singing, sailing, and skiing.
Xiufei Zhang (she/her) comes to WHOI from Xiamen University in China, where she is currently studying large-scale atmospheric circulation with a focus on the variation of Arctic oscillation. This summer, Xiufei is studying the variability of the shelf-break jet and the interannual variation of wind-forced upwelling/downwelling with Bob Pickart. In her free time, Xiufei likes listening to music, reading, watching movies and practicing calligraphy.
