WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY (WHPL)

February 10 @ 8:00 am - February 25 @ 12:00 am

Library volunteers will be holding their eagerly awaited “Fabric & Fiber Sale” on Sunday, February 9, from 10 a.m, to 2 p.m. People come from far and wide, first to donate, and later to buy fabric, yarn, notions, and much more. This one-day event is a major source of fundraising for the library’s operating budget, and the generosity of both donors and shoppers are crucial to its success. After Falmouth’s only fabric store, Fabric Corner, burned down in 2014 leaving the town without a local place to buy material for sewing projects, Woods Hole Public Library community members hatched a plan to hold a fundraiser sale on Super Bowl Sunday at the library. The first sale in February 2015 was a great success, and the tradition has continued and grown every year, with only a one-year interruption due to Covid, making this year’s sale the 10th anniversary of this community event. Donations for the sale have been pouring in since the beginning of January. Many volunteer hours go into making this sale a well-organized, fun, community shopping experience. The library is happy to offer this sale both as an important source of fundraising and as a way to further its mission of sharing community resources. For more information, please visit www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org or call (508) 548-8961. Please note, free parking for this event is available just down the street from the library in WHOI’s Challenger Lot. The library will be offering a course in beekeeping again this year. The course is designed for beginners and consists of five classes, covering honeybee biology and behavior, beekeeping methods and equipment, dealing with pests and diseases, seasonal management, nutrition and feeding, planting for pollinators, harvesting products of the hive, and more. The course will be taught by Master Beekeeper Anne Richards, who has been keeping bees in Falmouth for about 20 years. Classes will meet Monday and Thursday evenings, 7-9 p.m. at the library, February 10-24. The fee for the course is $80 ($40 for under 18), which includes the classes and first-year membership in the Barnstable County Beekeepers Association. Registration and payment are required to reserve a seat. Please pay with cash, check, or credit card at the library, or call (508) 548-8961 to register and pay over the phone. Bienvenue à tous les enfants! The library will offer a series of introductory French classes for kids in grades 2-6 on Tuesdays in February from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Native French speaker Patricia Richardson will lead the class, which will be focused on basic conversation. Kids will learn the basics of how to introduce themselves and how to converse about topics such as pets, foods, and hobbies. Building on these basics, kids will be able to learn through fun hands-on activities like pretending to be at a restaurant or an airport. Before relocating to Woods Hole from Paris, Patricia worked for Make-A-Wish France for many years and loved the many special interactions she had with children there. She’d like to continue to share about her culture and language with young bright minds who are curious about her beautiful home country. This free class is open to kids in grades 2-6, and registration is required by calling the library at (508) 548-8961 or emailing whpl_mail@clamsnet.org. The first class will meet on Tuesday, February 4, at 4:30 p.m., and the series will continue until Tuesday, February 25.
