WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY: Raffle of local pottery

December 11, 2019 @ 12:00 am

The library is again, as it has for more than a dozen years, running a raffle of local pottery. Thanks to the leadership of Woods Hole Potter Ann Newbury, a core of other potters donate beautiful pieces every year. The public eagerly awaits this opportunity to simultaneously win a piece of local art and support their local library. All the pieces have been graciously donated by potters who eke out their living with their craft. The featured potters are Ann Newbury, Tessa Morgan, Anne Halpin, and, new this year, Sarah Caruso. Despite the geographical closeness of their studios, the craftsmen’s styles are surprisingly different. Tessa, whose business is called Flying Pig Pottery, specializes in sgraffito, in which she creates an image by carving away the surrounding surface, leaving it unglazed. This year, her piece is a large platter with whales swimming around a sea-green center. Ann Newbury’s work is always strong, traditional, functional, and beautiful as is this year’s donation of two large pieces: one is her signature “batter bowl” with attached handle to make it easy to stir while the bowl is perched on the baker’s hip. This one is colored in mellow blues and grays. Her second piece is a large serving bowl, in shades of brown. Both exhibit innate grace and beauty and strength. Anne Halpin of Quissett Studio Pottery creates pieces that are also traditional, but with a more delicate touch. She specializes in glazes of muted blues and greens. This year, she has donated a plate and bowl pair, in shades of blue. Sarah Caruso also specializes in sgraffito, often in brilliant colors. Her first-time offering in the raffle is a cup and bowl with whimsical figures glazed in shiny obsidian. Tickets for the raffle, which are $2 for one and $5 for three tickets, are available at the library at 581 Woods Hole Road. Tickets will also be on sale at Woods Hole’s Renaissance Fair on December 7. The final day to buy tickets is Wednesday, December 11, when the drawing will be held. All this pottery is on view when the library is open, check website for times. Images of the pots are also on view at the library’s website as well as a listing of the specific open hours: www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org
