Woods Hole Public Library: Community art project

June 20, 2019 @ 2:22 pm

The library is holding a community art project this summer, inviting all members of the community, no matter their level of expertise, to take part. Rather than the recycled books, nautical charts, and chairs of yesteryear, the subject of the art this year is horseshoe crabs. The library has already collected molts of various sizes so people can stop by the library, sign up, and choose a molt to recreate into a piece of art as soon as they wish. One reason this project is possible is that horse shoe crabs shed their shell as they grow, providing us with ready raw material. Female horseshoe crabs are said to molt 17 times before they reach maturity, which means there are a lot of empty shells for us to work with. People can come in any time the library is open to choose their molt, take it home, and create. As in previous years, everyone is required to bring back their finished art project and make it available for a silent auction at the library. People will be able to come view the Art Show and enter their bid amount anytime the library is open between July 22 and July 27. The date for the final bidding is the day of the party which will be held on Saturday, July 27, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Near the end of the party, the highest bidders will receive their new piece of art and they can proudly carry it home. For more information, visit the website www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org. The library is seeking used bicycles, both for kids and adults, to sell at their annual “Kids’ Carnival” in early July. Bicycles should be in good condition, though the library does have a long-time summer volunteer who does tune-ups on the donated bikes. People have come to think of the library’s sale as the place to go to re-up their household’s bicycle collection for the summer. Families that are here only for summer at the Woods Hole Institutions often come in to get bikes for their kids. The library looks to the community’s gifts to make this all possible, as well as producing a nice addition to the library’s funds. Bikes may be dropped off throughout the month of June at the library during open hours which include every late afternoon, and also Wednesday morning and Monday and Saturday from noon on. People may call the library at
