WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY

July 18, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY: The summer Social Justice Book Group at the library continues its discussions of important societal issues on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m., with Tiya Miles’ book Ties That Bind, the Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom. This beautifully written book tells the haunting saga of Shoe Boots, a famed Cherokee warrior and successful farmer, and Doll, an African slave he acquired in the late 1790s.This is the gripping story of their lives, in slavery and in freedom. This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome. For more information, visit the library’s website at www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org. The library is holding a community art project this summer, inviting all members of the community, no matter their level of expertise, to take part. Rather than the recycled books, nautical charts, and chairs of yesteryear, the subject of the art this year is horseshoe crabs. The library has already collected molts of various sizes so people can stop by the library, sign up, and choose a molt to recreate into a piece of art as soon as they wish. One reason this project is possible is that horse shoe crabs shed their shell as they grow, providing us with ready raw material. Female horseshoe crabs are said to molt 17 times before they reach maturity, which means there are a lot of empty shells for us to work with. People can come in any time the library is open to choose their molt, take it home, and create. As in previous years, everyone is required to bring back their finished art project and make it available for a silent auction at the library. People will be able to come view the Art Show and enter their bid amount anytime the library is open between July 22 and July 27. The date for the final bidding is the day of the party which will be held on Saturday, July 27, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Near the end of the party, the highest bidders will receive their new piece of art and they can proudly carry it home. For more information, call the library at (508)548-8961 or visit the website www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org.
