PEANUT BUTTER CLUB: Presents a discussion with WHOI Scientist Joan Bernhard and Artist/Printmaker Terry Conrad on Terry’s exhibition of works entitled Psammochthonica anoxiki (Belonging to the Sandy Anoxic Underworld): A Print Maker’s Interpretation

August 2, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

PEANUT BUTTER CLUB: Presents a discussion with WHOI Scientist Joan Bernhard and Artist/Printmaker Terry Conrad on Terry’s exhibition of works entitled Psammochthonica anoxiki (Belonging to the Sandy Anoxic Underworld): A Print Maker’s Interpretation on August 2, at noon, in Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water St., Woods Hole. A major research theme in the biological sciences is understanding how organisms adapt to environmental extremes. The Santa Barbara Basin is a bowl-shaped geological formation off the coast of Santa Barbara, California. Limited movement of water in this depression has created an environment severely depleted of oxygen. In such a place it would be surprising to find organisms that need oxygen to live, yet scientists have documented the existence of foraminifera, a type of single-celled organism, living there in abundance. How have foraminifera adapted to an oxygen-deprived environment? For that matter, how do any organisms respond to living in such extreme environments? These questions fuel the research of Joan Bernhard and her colleagues, in their study of this natural “dead zone” in the ocean. This exhibition is a part of a continuing dialogue between a group of artists and scientists in response to Joan’s research. The art exhibition is being hosted at the WHOI Ocean Science Discovery Center from August 3 through August 17, 2019. There will be a reception for the artist on Sunday, August 4, from 3 – 5 p.m. These events are free and open to the public. Sponsored by the WHOI Visitor Center and Ocean Science Discovery Center. Coffee, tea, and cookies served. Donations accepted.
