Increasing Minority Participation in STEM with Dr. Nevada Winrow and Dr. Dijanna Figueroa

Please join us Tuesday July 25 at 10 a.m. for a presentation by Dr. Nevada Winrow and Dr. Dijanna Figueroa. The presentation will take place at Redfield Auditorium (45 Water St, Woods Hole MA) and streamed on Zoom (RSVP required for Zoom attendees). We will be following the State of Massachusetts Mask Guidance.

Dr. Nevada Winrow, Founder of Black Girls Dive Foundation: Dr. Winrow is a Johns Hopkins School of Medicine-trained Pediatric Neuropsychologist and has served as a clinical practitioner and an administrator in higher education for over a decade in roles as Dean, Provost, and Senior Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. She has served as a Trustee on the Board of Trustees for two HBCUs and served as a member of the US Fulbright Scholars Review Board and the Board of Examiners for Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, our nation’s highest honor that is bestowed by the President of the United States.

Nevada is an alumna of several institutions that include Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Howard University, and Lincoln University and completed fellowships in Neuroradiology, Psychoneuroimmunology, Cognitive Neuroscience and Neurochemistry. Currently Dr. Winrow serves on the board of the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Alumni Association and is the National Chairwoman for the National Association of Black SCUBA divers’ Youth Program.  Nevada is a FAA licensed airman and drone pilot with membership of Maryland Civil Air Patrol (CAP), where she serves as a CAP aerospace educator. Nevada is a PADI Certified Master Scuba Diver, an Associate member of the Women’s Diving Hall of Fame and member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences.

Dr. Dijanna Figueroa, Chief Academic Officer at Black Girls Dive Foundation: Dr. Dijanna Figueroa has made a career of exploring the mysteries of the deep. She was featured in James Cameron’s documentary Aliens of the Deep, which follows Cameron and NASA scientists as they explore some of the deepest parts of the ocean and learn about the unique life forms that inhabit those spaces. Committed to spreading the joy and wonder of the ocean to all people, she works behind the scenes as a marine science consultant for various film and multimedia production companies. Dr. Figueroa holds a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of California Santa Barbara. She is excited to join the Black Girls Dive Foundation team as the Chief Academic Officer. In this role she has oversight of the strategic direction of teaching and learning. Her forward thinking, commitment, and passion to making ocean science accessible to all people authentically aligns with the mission, vision and values of Black Girls Dive Foundation.
