Air-Ice-Sea interactions in West Spitsbergen fjords

Instruments in the ice

MIT-WHOI Joint Program student Lukas Lobert deployed an ADCP from sea-ice to investigate how the advection of warm Atlantic Water into West Spitsbergen fjords affects fast sea-ice melt. Measurements were taken in coordination with the fieldwork component of the undergraduate class “AGF-211 Air-Ice-Sea Interactions,” run by Frank Nilsen at UNIS Svalbard, Norway. The students enjoyed getting hands-on experience in measuring the interactions between the ocean, atmosphere, and sea ice in an Arctic environment. (Photo provided by Lukas Lobert)
