WOODS HOLE PUBLIC LIBRARY (WHPL):
July 2 @ 8:00 am - July 8 @ 5:00 pm
The library will begin its summer season of Wednesday morning story times with a special Storytime and Puppet Playtime on Wednesday, July 2, at 10:30 am. Charlie and Lola, the beloved characters from Lauren Child’s series of picture books, will be brought to life by whimsical puppets created by Jacek Zuzanski. The Children’s Room of the library will transform into a puppet playground for Charlie and Lola’s adventures in “But Excuse Me That is My Book,” as the characters explore the library in search of a book for Lola. This playful storytelling experience is perfect for kids as well as grown-ups who love books, puppets, and a little library magic! Jacek Zuzanski is the founder and artistic director of Dream Tale Puppets, an ensemble of mostly Cape Cod artists dedicated to the study of both traditional and innovative styles of puppetry. This summer, the group will present a series of programs at the Woods Hole Community Hall: “Build Your Own Toy Theatre Workshop,” Thursday, July 3; “Three Little Pigs and After Show Workshop,” Sunday, July 6; “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Saturday, July 12; “Alice, or the Red King’s Dream,” Friday, July 18. Check the website: dreamtalepuppets.org for more information. This special story time on July 2 kicks off the library’s Preschool Storytime series for the summer. Every Wednesday morning, at 10:30 a.m., kids and their caregivers are invited to listen to a few stories in the library’s cheerful Children’s Room. Kids of all ages are welcome, but the books will be geared toward preschool-aged children. The library will welcome Derek Denckla, a long-time summer visitor to Woods Hole, and award-winning poet and professor of creative writing at Los Angeles Film School, for a two-day poetry workshop in July. The workshop is titled “Casting Your Lines in Sea Foam from Bolinas to Buzzards Bay” and will include an examination of the poets of Bolinas, California, as well as an opportunity for participants to write their own work. In the first meeting on Tuesday, July 1, at 3 p.m., the group will read and discuss excerpts from the recently re-released and expanded book, “On the Mesa: An Anthology of Bolinas Writing” (Song Cave, 2021). In the second meeting on Tuesday, July 8, at 3 p.m., the group will use these writings as prompts to create their own work that they will read and discuss. Recommended for persons 17 and older. To participate and receive a link to the readings, please call the library at (508) 548-8961 or email whpl_mail@clamsnet.org to register. The Summer Reading Program kicks off July 1 and runs through the end of August. Join us in honoring the stories that connect us to our village—and in creating new ones.
