Curatorial Associate/Collection Manager
Harvard University Museum of Comparative Zoology

Shortly after I arrived at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) in 1975, I was invited, by Dick Haedrick, to go on Oceanus ’05 , for her maiden research cruise (April, 1976).   We worked the Hudson Canyon area with deep-benthic trawls.  Later, I was on Oceanus ‘125, ‘158, and finally as Chief Scientist on ‘191.  Since the first cruise, I have always compared the various vessels that I have been on to Oceanus and none fit her shoes.

Our museum worked closely with WHOI’s  Dick Backus, Jim Craddock, Dick Haedrick, Larry Madin, and Rich Harbison and thousands of specimens were archived at MCZ to make it the best collection of North Atlantic oceanic fishes in the world.  Oceanus cruises alone contributed over 22 thousand cataloged lots, with 1290 species, in 186 families. Thanks to the captains and crews who sailed with her.
