How Spray Works

Spray carries a variety of sensors that collect data that give scientists a clearer understanding of the temperature, salinity, and turbidity of specific areas of the oceans. These measurements are then used to understand ocean circulation and determine its role and influence on the global climate. Spray has a range of 6,000 kilometers, or about 3,500 miles. It could potentially cross the Atlantic Ocean and other ocean basins to accomplish research needs. (Illustration by Jayne Doucette, WHOI Graphic Services)
