At Sea Test 2 Deployments
On September 22, 2011, a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians departed the WHOI dock aboard the R/V Oceanus - its deck chock-a-block full of equipment - on a five-day expedition to deploy three moorings on the continental slope south of Cape Cod. Over the next several months, the equipment will collect data on ocean conditions that will contribute to our scientific understanding of the ocean, but more importantly the moorings themselves will be tested for their use as part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, a networked infrastructure of science-driven sensor systems to measure the physical, chemical, geological and biological variables in the ocean and seafloor. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation. The mooring deployment marks the first comprehensive test of an OOI system on the East Coast.  (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
