The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death November 26, 2003, of retiree Peter P. O’Reilly, formally of Mashpee, in Phoenix. He was 77.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death November 12, 2003, of retiree Samuel T. Simkins at Haborside Healthcare of Falmouth after a brief illness. He was 79. Sam joined the WHOI staff in 1968 as a research assistant in the Geology and Geophysics Department. He transferred to the Ocean Engineering Department in 1971 and to the Physical Oceanography Department in 1976, working with the Buoy Group until he retired in 1988. He then worked at WHOI on a casual basis from 1991 to 1993.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death October 30, 2003, of Patricia E. Thompson of Falmouth after a long illness with emphysema. She was 68.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death July 29, 2003, of Monika B. Grinnell after a long battle with cancer. Monika, a Senior Grants Administrator in Grant and Contract Services, died at her home in East Falmouth, MA, at age 61.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death July 1, 2003, of Frederick A. Brauneis of East Falmouth, MA at Falmouth Hospital. He was 79.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death June 20, 2003, of Honorary Member of the Corporation Walter N. “Bill” Rothschild, Jr. at Huntington Hospital on Long Island of complications from surgery. He was 83.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death June 22, 2003 of Honorary Trustee and Honorary Member Kenneth S. “Mike” Safe, Jr. of Duxbury, MA. He was 73.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death on May 22, 2003 of Carol Ann Alessi of Centerville after a long illness. She was 51. At the time of her death, she was an Information Systems Associate in the Physical Oceanography Department, working with Bob Beardsley and Amy Bower.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death February 15, 2003, of retiree John W. Stimpson of Falmouth. He died at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston at age 87.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death January 18, 2003, of retiree Phyllis B. Casile of Falmuth.

The Institution has received word of the death of Alvin L. Bradshaw December 9, 2002, at his residence in Wareham. Al began working at the Institution in 1952 as a research assistant for Allyn Vine in ocean engineering. He retired in 1987 but continued on a casual basis as a research specialist until 1997. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death November 21, 2002, for retiree M. Dorothy Rogers at the Royal Megansett Nursing Home in North Falmouth. She was 93.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death October 16, 2002, of retiree Roger Joseph Dube at his home in Lake City, Florida, after a brief illness. He was 74.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death May 19, 2002 of retiree Mary Ortolani of Sagamore, MA. She was 93.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death March 22, 2002, of former seaman Thomas F. O’Neil of Hull. He was 77. Tom joined the Institution staff in October 1970 as an able bodied seaman aboard Research Vessel Knorr and left the Institution in November 1980. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to Irish Mossing and Maritime Museum, 43 Cudworth Road, Scituate, MA 02066.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the unexpected death February 26, 2002, of retiree and former Assistant Director for Administration Joseph Kiebala, Jr., at his home in Cataumet, MA. He was 78.

The Institution has received word of the death of Honorary Member of the Corporation William Davis Taylor at his Brookline home February 19, 2002. He was 93. Mr. Taylor became a Member of the Corporation in 1970 and an Honorary Member in 1978. The cause of death was heart failure. Further details will be posted as available.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of Gloria Franklin, Administrative Professional in AOP&E, who passed away Saturday, January 19th, at her home in Falmouth after a short battle with brain cancer. Visiting hours are Monday, Jan. 21st from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Chapman, Cole, & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, at 11:00 am at Elizabeth G. Parke Chapel in Oak Grove Cemetery on Jones Rd., Falmouth, with the burial to follow. A copy of the complete notice will be posted as available.
