The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has received word of the death March 22, 2002, of former seaman Thomas F. O’Neil of Hull. He was 77. Tom joined the Institution staff in October 1970 as an able bodied seaman aboard Research Vessel Knorr and left the Institution in November 1980. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to Irish Mossing and Maritime Museum, 43 Cudworth Road, Scituate, MA 02066.

Visiting hours are Monday, Jan. 21st from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Chapman, Cole, & Gleason Funeral Home in Falmouth. The funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22nd, at 11:00 am at Elizabeth G. Nimitz, Jr., USN (Ret.) at his home in Needham, MA. He was 86. In failing health, he and his wife of 63 years, Joan (Labern) Nimitz, 89, took their own lives in an apparent suicide pact.

The Institution has received word of the death of Geoffrey G. Whitney Jr. of Woods Hole. He was 86. Geoff joined the Institution in 1951 as a research assistant in the Physical Oceanography Department working on the calibration and maintenance of deep sea reversing thermometers.. He retired in 1981 but continued to service thermometers for WHOI on a casual basis. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Further details will be posted as available.
