Sean Kelly (left), Justin Fujii (foreground), and Hannah Baker performed a series of tests with the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry on the WHOI dock in February. Engineers and technicians are constantly upgrading the vehicle to perform more efficiently and to do new jobs. These tests were designed to check Sentry‘s ballast, navigation, drive, sensing, and other systems in preparation for cruises later this year that will see it working alone and with both the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Jason and the human-occupied submersible Alvin.
