Weather Or Not

Weather Or Not

July 10, 2014

Researcher Glenn McDonald watched from the research vessel Mytilus as biologist Rob Olson ran cabling up to the Air Sea Interaction Tower at the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory in the summer of 2003. The 76-foot tower, anchored in 50 feet of water two miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, hosts sensors that measure a variety of atmospheric and ocean conditions, such as air temperature, humidity, solar radiation, and carbon dioxide, as well as water temperature, salinity, wave height, speed, and direction. McDonald and Olson are among the WHOI scientists who helped to conceive and operate the tower, which operates year-round in all weather conditions.(Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
