The Beginning

The Beginning

August 19, 2014

Fifty years ago, the research submersible Alvin celebrated its start of service to science in a ceremony attended by hundreds at the WHOI dock. Since then, it has transported hundreds of scientists into the deep ocean and helped identify many new animal species. Today, Tuesday, August 19, Alvin Project Manager Bruce Strickrott will lead a Science Made Public talk at 2:30 p.m. in Redfield Auditorium that traces the evolution of human exploration of the deep ocean from imagination to reality. At the end of his talk, Strickrott will moderate a live phone call from the auditorium to Alvin‘s support ship, R/V Atlantis, and, weather permitting, to Alvin during a dive to the Juan de Fuca Ridge in the Northeast Pacific.(Photo courtesy of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Archives)
