Optical model

A New View

A new underwater imaging system developed by WHOI's Advanced Imaging and Visualization Laboratory is being tested at submerged shipwreck sites in the U.S. and Europe. The technology enables the rapid production of 3-D optical volumetric models—images of objects or ocean environments that scientists can spin to view from all sides, and zoom in on to explore around and inside. Above is a photo of a 3-D optical model of the Corsair, a WWII military plane that crashed off Hawaii in 1948 after running out of fuel during a routine mission. AIVL created this 3-D optical model in collaboration with the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center.
