Handle with Care

The sea raven, is a common bottom-dweller in ocean waters off New England. WHOI postdoctoral investigator Andrea Bogomolni (pictured) and WHOI researcher Alex Bocconcelli encountered this one earlier this summer while doing field work for a collaborative project with local fishers and the Center for Coastal Studies. Using cameras attached to fishing nets, the team are documenting depredation—the loss of catch to predators such as seals. They are also studying bycatch: animals, like this sea raven, that are unintentionally caught in fishing nets. (Photo Alex Bocconcelli, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
