Thomas B. Wheeler

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of Former Trustee, Life Trustee, and Chair of the WHOI Corporation, Thomas B. Wheeler, on November 4, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and cancer. He was 89.

Born in 1936, Tom lived a life marked by his extraordinary character and deep devotion to his family.

After graduating from Yale University in 1958, Tom proudly served his country in the United States Navy, an experience that strengthened his lifelong sense of patriotism. He went on to build an extraordinary career with MassMutual, where he rose through the ranks from Sales Representative in 1972 to General Agent, Executive Vice President, President, and ultimately Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, retiring in 2000.

Beyond his many professional achievements, Tom dedicated much of his time to causes and organizations he deeply believed in. He served on numerous boards as Chairman or Trustee, including Oppenheimer, Textron, Springfield College, The American College, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, and the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was especially proud of his work as Chairman of the Massachusetts State Committee for the United States Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Corporation of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Tom will be remembered as a consummate gentleman who treated everyone with kindness and generosity. A gracious and thoughtful host, he was known for greeting friends and family alike with his favorite phrase: “May I get you a beverage?”

Nothing was more important to Tom than his family. He was incredibly proud of each of them. His happiest moments were spent with family on his boat, around the dinner table, or chatting in the kitchen, as he was always interested, supportive, and loving.

Those who knew Tom will carry with them the memory of his steady kindness and his genuine appreciation for everyone who crossed his path. His legacy lives on in the warmth of his family, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched with his grace and generosity.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Robin, his daughters Lisa (and her husband Garz Soule) and Wendy (and her husband Lane MacDonald), and his six adored grandchildren: Caroline Kahler (and her husband Austin), Thomas Soule (and his wife Shelby), Chad Soule, Catherine MacDonald, Ben MacDonald, and Maddie MacDonald. He was also blessed to meet his great-grandson, James Kahler.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution whoi.edu/givenow in Tom’s honor.
