Maxine M. Jones
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the
death November 10, 2006 of retiree Maxine M. Jones in Falmouth, MA. She was 72.
Maxine grew up in Massey, Maryland, and was the daughter of William and
Marie Moffett. She graduated with honors from the University of
Maryland where she double majored in mathematics and chemistry.
When Maxine first moved to Cape Cod in 1956, she taught physics and
chemistry at Bourne High School. In 1955, Maxine joined the WHOI staff
as a mathematics aid doing computations and data analysis. From
1967 to 1971 she worked as a research assistant/programmer in Geology
and Geophysics. She later transferred to Ocean Engineering where
she participated in the development of real-time, at-sea data
acquisition and processing systems. In connection with her work,
Maxine participated in approximately a dozen cruises. She retired
in 1994 as an information systems specialist.
In her retirement, Maxine enjoyed traveling and collecting antique
quilts. She also was an avid birdwatcher and active supporter of many
animal causes and charities. She leaves two daughters, Frances P.
Philip of South Freeport, Maine and Sarah V. Boudreau of Norfolk,
Virginia.
