Leonard Cartwright

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death of former employee Leonard Cartwright on March 13, after a brief illness.  He was 91.

Lenny was born in West Bromwich, England in 1917.

Lenny worked as a printer’s assistant in the WHOI Graphics Department under Mark Hickey from 1987 to 2005. “Lenny was a true craftsman.  Job satisfaction came from a job well done,” said Mark Hickey. “He went about his work with a quiet professionalism, letting his expertise speak for itself.”  

Lenny began his career as an apprentice printer in England until the Second World War broke out.  During the War, he served six years in Egypt with the Royal Air Force as an airplane mechanic working on Hurricanes and Spitfires. After the War he and his wife Peggy immigrated to the United States with their daughter Sally Ann. They settled in Middleboro, MA, where they had two additional children, Stephen and Shelley.

While in Middleboro, Lenny worked as shop foreman for many years at the Hanson Printing Company in Brockton. Following his retirement, he moved to East Falmouth, MA.

Lenny was a Mason for over 50 years, being a member of both the Middleboro May Flower Lodge and the Falmouth Marine Lodge. He enjoyed fishing along the Cape Cod Canal and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret “Peggy” Cartwright; his daughter Sally Ann Harlos and her husband Leonard of Vieques, Puerto Rico; his son Stephen W. Cartwright and his wife Diana of Manomet; and his daughter Shelley L. Hocking and her husband James of East Falmouth. In addition, he is survived by his grandchildren: Gregory Seychew of East Falmouth and Lauren Seychew of Canton; Ashley, Allison, and Jason Cartwright of Manomet; and Jainee, Juli, and Jenna Hocking of East Falmouth. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Derek Seychew of East Falmouth and Christopher Seychew of Canton.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 91 Main Street, Falmouth, MA, at noon on Saturday, March 21. Interment of ashes will follow in the Saint Barnabas Memorial Garden.
